For Gen Z, bank accounts and cash are out, mobile wallets are in

Even as the US government is moving cautiously to regulate and adopt cryptocurrency, new surveys are showing that the use of traditional financial services, such as bank accounts and cash, is already waning — especially among youngr customers.A survey released last week by global payment platform provider Thunes shed light on the shopping, social media, and money-handling habits of so-called “Zoomers" — the Genz generation born in the mid- to late-1990s.To read this article in full, please click here

What to do about IE and .NET?

It looks as if Internet Explorer (IE) will soon be gone from our PCs and .NET 4.5.2, 4.6 and 4.6.1 will drop out of support on April 26. So, we should just rip out IE and .NET from our machines, right? Not so fast. First, you might have an application that relies on an older version of IE or .NET; removing them might not be wise – especially if you’re still using Windows 7. Or you can wait for updates from important vendors. Case in point: I recently received an email from a key vendor saying it will be providing software updates to remove a dependency from IE. The vendor is going so far as to provide updates to older software releases that date back to 2017. (The software is released annually and, thus, needs updates to use older versions.)To read this article in full, please click here

We’re one step closer to Windows in the cloud

I've been saying for a long time now that Microsoft's master Windows plan is to move you to a cloud-based Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) model. Earlier this year, I pointed out that Windows 11 was nudging us towards Windows as a Service (WaaS).The march continues. At last week’s "Windows Powers the Future of Hybrid Work" virtual event and in its paper, New experiences in Windows 11 and Windows 365 empower new ways of working Microsoft has laid out the next steps in its vision of tomorrow's Windows desktop. To read this article in full, please click here

It's an all-too-common pairing here in the land o' Googley matters, and that exact progression is in the midst of playing out for many an eager Chromebook owner this very moment.Have you felt it yet? WWDC: Apple's call to code and the no-code future

When there aren’t enough developers to go around, what can a company like Apple do to try and fix the problem? Two things, really – invest in global education in coding skills, and make its existing environments easier to use.Apple won’t have a no-code future WWDC 2022, announced this week and set to take place June 6-10, declares a ‘Call to code,” rather than a call to no code. Apple won’t have a no-code future, but must continue to build developer environments to empower people without much coding knowledge to build increasingly complex apps.To read this article in full, please click here

Don't look now, but the blue-collar remote work revolution is coming

I saw the remote revolution at work in a dusty village in Northwest Africa.I'm a digital nomad who lives internationally. Right now, I'm in Morocco, which is an amazing country to visit — and to work from.Last week, on a drive from Essouira to Marrakesh, my wife and I stopped with some friends to visit an argan cooperative. Argan oil is produced in significant quantities only in this region of Morocco, where argan trees are endemic. The oil is used for both cosmetics and food. (Moroccans also use it, combined with almond butter and honey, to create a delicious breakfast dip for bread called amlou.)To read this article in full, please click here
